Mirai Nikki – Volume 4

Akise Aru

He is just awesome.

If you want to read a summary mixed with my thoughts, read my review in Mirai Nikki – 01-08.

There are a few differences from episode 8 so far. The first scene in the manga was the first appearance of Akise Aru. The anime did it well to compress these chapters into one episode, and so, didn’t need this part to give you the thrill of the new character. Second, Akise Aru suddenly stands in the middle of them while they saw the corpse of Hinata. He actually talks while moving to their group. Third, if I recall correctly, Tenth’s screen didn’t show any ‘live broadcast’ in the anime. Fourth, the windows were really weird. It was quite illogical for the manga to actually make a move for the window to be moved side to side, not the usual front to back, which makes it easier for the dogs to penetrate. Thus, the anime did better on this one. Fifth, Yuki openly talked about having the power to predict the future. There was much more drama in the manga, which wasn’t really needed at all. How the anime did to this, either to compress the chapters in one episode or simply make it better, was a really great move. And sixth, when Mao moved in to take Yuki as a hostage, in the anime, she immediately took his phone and gave it to Hinata. The manga’s move was to have Hinata take it away in the pocket. Either way, it was realistic, but the former was more realistic. Once again, another good move in the anime.

Up until now, I am completely taken aback at how things have completely turned into the hands of Hinata… for the meantime. I didn’t really expect for the Tenth to give him his Future Diary. But the most surprising part was how Deus ex Machina didn’t allow such thing to happen, to give it to a third party.

The manga was really smart to make a move in making a Sherlock Holmes character, Akise Aru. As a result of the hostage event taking place, they make deals and trades for whoever gets to guess which hand has the coin. On Akise’s side, the chips are Akise’s and Yuno’s diary. On their side, they have Yuki’s body and Yuki’s diary. On the first “toss,” Akise fails to guess and gives Yuno’s diary to them. They now have 3 chips. On the next toss, Akise gets it right and takes back Yuki. On the third, Akise gets it right again and take back Yuno’s diary. However, this is the time to realize that we have a person who’s smarter than Yuno, and takes everything to rationalizing and speaking, instead of Yuno’s idea to kill people right off the bat when things happen unexpectedly. With Yuno realizing that he isn’t a Diary owner, things changed. Akise sounds like a narcissistic bastard, but let’s face it, he’s also a cool, smart dude.

This is their last gamble, however, Akise’s life and Yuki’s diary. Akise makes a plan that needs somehow needs Yuno for it to be made. For even him to lie (or not? I want to believe he’s lying; yaoi is watdapak to me) about his love for Yuki just to get Yuno on his side, that’s almost like a desperate plan. Everything went to Akise’s plan, went well, strong and good, but I honestly got confused in the first reading. He was saying ‘right’ and it was on her ‘left’ hand, so I feel kind of stupid for not understanding what it meant on the first reading. Unfortunately, things went mad. Mao attacked Hinata and stabbed his hand. Yuno immediately made her attack by stabbing Mao in the stomach. She got her diary, but she was pushed away by Hinata. As she was being obsessively worried about how things would turn out, Hinata hurriedly tries to stop her bleeding but even so, she believes she is dead. Everyone runs away, but Hinata uses his Breeding Diary to capture all of them.

Everything is as confusing as it was in the beginning. Yuno still wants to go stick to the original plan to leave them behind while they escape, but Yuki firmly makes his stand that they’re going to stop and keep his friends alive. Yuki cries himself out with the same decision and makes it to Hinata. She reports all groups of dogs back, but Yuno takes the initiative to take her as hostage to stop the dogs. All the dogs stopped; Akise and Kousaka comes back to them safely. She finally convince Yuno by lying that he’s his girlfriend, and so everything goes well, that everyone comes back home safely.

In return to all the failing actions Hinata made, his dad communicates with her through a dog. He tells him everything about how he was lying and ends his last words by telling Hinata not to be the same person as him, and to keep an eye out for the bad persons who put up good faces.

Everything ends horribly with all the confusion in this state, on how the Fourth has got his hands on the Tenth, pointing his gun at him.

Every piece of this volume, in the manga, I still can’t stop myself from being surprised at how things are turning about like this. Yuki’s ideas to do this and that involved more risks and dangers than Yuno’s simple ideas to take down their lives. Yuki did everything, and everything went well, especially with the help of the much more rationalizing Akise. With the theme of betrayal for this show, I don’t know where it’s going, and I don’t know what the Tenth was pointing out by the bad guys putting out nice faces. If he was referring to the Fourth, we can easily believe him that he’s trying to take down all of the Future Diary Users and leave the hardest to kill for last as he is gaining trust from them, but we can easily confuse it as well that he’s a Diary User who wants to put an end to the other Diary Users who aren’t using it for the good.

The answer to this is all in the next volume, and I hope I get to enjoy the same ride as I did in this episode. It all tricked me to believe that Akise’s a Diary User and made me believe astoundingly that he would make a great detective. I don’t know how their lives will turn out in the next chapter, most especially Akise. If he were to turn his side on Yuki, that’s a great addition to their already invincible team. However, if that were the case, all the more reason to see conflicts to this show as it has already made a strong stand between the Yuki-Yuno conflicts. Ah, this is definitely a great show, and I might not be taking that back, even if I were to see an ending worse than it should be.
